Start time on day 1: The workshop will start at 12 pm at the Distinction Rotorua.
Finish time on day 4: The workshop will finish in time to be in Rotorua by 4 pm on the last day to connect with late flights.
Maximum group size of 8 will be led by two tutors. Limiting class sizes ensures we provide you with the best learning environment possible, including expert guidance, instruction and personal attention, according to your learning style.
The workshop begins with a classroom session covering essential techniques for photographing birds in flight and at rest, followed by a guided shoot at Sulphur Point. On Saturday, you’ll refine your editing skills with a Lightroom workshop, then head out to an evening golden hour session at the lakefront, with an optional opportunity to photograph Tūī in cherry trees.
Sunday takes us to Wingspan, where you’ll have the chance to photograph falcons in flight during a group raptor session. The weekend concludes with a final editing session, where you’ll polish your best images and receive personalised feedback.
Please note: Activities may vary slightly due to weather conditions or availability.
A basic level of physical activity is required to enjoy the workshop. All shooting locations are within walking distance, though sometimes on uneven ground with your own equipment. Please let us know if fitness or mobility is a concern.
Ideally, you will have a basic knowledge of photography and be comfortable adjusting camera settings such as aperture and shutter speed. An aim of the workshop is to give you more confidence in the creative control of camera settings and shooting in manual mode, we will use a lot of “Live View” so make sure you have a second battery. We will have a brief session at the start of the workshop, covering camera settings and controls, to be sure everyone is up to speed.
If you are yet to master the basics, perhaps check out our Photo Schools in Auckland and Wellington.
Camera Equipment: Our workshops focus on how to use your camera, not your type of camera. A basic list of recommended camera equipment can be found here
