New Zealand Photography Workshops is a Wanaka-based photography tour operator running multi-day, small-group landscape photography workshops and tours across New Zealand’s South Island for photographers of all levels, from enthusiastic beginners to professionals.
Founded in 2013 by photographer Richard Young, we run four to five-day workshops and seven to eighteen-day tours, plus international tours to Japan, Scotland, Antarctica and Namibia. Groups are small, usually four guests per tutor and never more than five, and our tours travel with two tutors — award-winning New Zealand photographers including Richard Young, Craig Potton, Ken Wright and Glen Howey.
What separates our tours is time and local knowledge. We spend extended time at each location rather than four to six hours a day driving, and as photographers who live here we know where to be and when. That means shooting in the best light and returning when conditions change, with your tutors alongside you in the field throughout — the teaching is what you are booking, not simply a list of places.
Our tour season starts in autumn to capture New Zealand’s fall colours and runs through winter into spring, making the most of the country’s best light and weather for photography.
We hold a Gold Qualmark Award, are Department of Conservation approved to guide in New Zealand’s national parks, and are the official Nikon and Epson workshop provider in New Zealand. We are also the trusted local operator for leading international photography tour companies including Art Wolfe, Light & Land and Van Os Photo Safaris.
