Matthias H. Risse is a photographer and technologist who has dedicated his career to exploring the intersection of nature, technology, and human experience. Born in Germany, he spent his formative years exploring the few remaining forests and mountains of his homeland, developing a deep appreciation for the natural world and its power to shape the human mind and spirit.

After studying computer science, art and photography in Dresden, Bielefeld and London, Matthias has been published in journals such as Spiegel Online, Smithsonian Magazine, Holo amongst others and was shortlisted for his landscape photography for the World Photography Award in 2012. He has spent the past years in the design and technology sphere, leading teams to design and develop intuitive products while continuing to exhibit internationally.

As he continued to hone his craft, Matthias became increasingly interested in the ways in which the natural environment can impact the human psyche and shape our perceptions of the world around us. This has led him to a deeper interest in the practice of meditation, how our mind constructs moments and sustainable systems. Through his art, he invites you to slow down, take a deep breath, and reconnect to your senses through the beauty and power of the world around us.

Matthias lives with his family in Māpua at the top of the South Island and enjoys tutoring in both English and German.
