Tony Whitehead is a four times finalist in New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year. In 2023 Tony was the only NZ photographer recognised in Bird Photographer of the Year with 2 images published with one Highly Commended in the Birds in Flight category. Tony’s work has been widely published in books and magazines nationally and internationally and his photos support a number of conservation and educational projects. He enjoys photo editing to optimise an image and is a firm believer in prints being the ultimate display for a photograph.
A keen photographer since childhood, learning skills from his photographer father. Based in the Bay of Plenty, he has experience in a variety of photographic genres but is obsessed with nature photography and specifically birds in flight.
Tony publishes a weekly educational blog sharing his recent work and photographic resources on everything from stage and portrait photography to wildlife fieldcraft, technical reviews and digital darkroom techniques.
