Based in Wanaka, our Autumn Masterclass offers you the opportunity to capture the drama of Autumn in some spectacular Central Otago landscapes. Expert tutors Richard Young and Glen Howey will help you expand your creative approach to nature and landscape photography in stunning Autumn locations, including backcountry 4WD trips.
On this masterclass workshop, you will learn how to develop an expressive approach to landscape and nature photography. Autumn is the perfect time of year to work with abstract and intimate subjects within the landscape, and our tutors will lead you through a mixture of both tuition and post-processing sessions to help you create some stunning photographs. We’ll conclude the masterclass by printing two of your best images as 16×22″ fine art prints.
We’ll include visits to various Autumn landscapes by the Clutha River and Lake Wanaka. We will spend a day exploring the remote Nevis Valley by 4WD – capturing the dramatic landscapes of the historic Gold Rush region and its stunning autumn colours. We’ll take a 4WD trip into the mountains on a private high country station with expansive views over Lake Wanaka.

I was incredibly fortunate to have recently won the ‘Win with Nikkor’ 2024 giveaway prize draw. It provided an exceptional opportunity to join accomplished landscape photographers Richard Young and Glen Howey, on a 4-day Autumn Masterclass workshop in Wānaka.
I attended this course with no background in landscape photography and an entirely new Nikon gear set-up, after switching to mirrorless. I was eager to learn and each day provided a wealth of knowledge, where I was able to grow my confidence. Throughout the Masterclass, I enjoyed the challenge of learning the technical skills required for photographing landscapes, along with the post-production aspects of the course. The locations were extra special, with the colours of Autumn providing beauty and a reminder of how lucky we are to be in the presence of nature’s vast grandeur.
Each day, Richard and Glen ensured that each participant was looked after and everyone’s individual needs were met. Both tutors brought their own set of diverse skills, readily sharing their knowledge, guidance and encouragement. Their excellent organisation, individual humour, along with compassion for people and the environment they dearly love, made the whole experience thoroughly outstanding! I was able to see landscape photography in a new light, where I am now able to go forward, with an appreciation of this creative and skillful craft.
I can’t recommend this workshop highly enough. I am an experienced photographer and have been for over 10 years, but I still learnt so much over the weekend. The guides are experts and have valuable knowledge to share for everyone no matter where they are on their photographic journey. Their local knowledge and expertise put us in situations to capture photos I would have otherwise thought weren’t possible. It really is the best investment you can make for your photography
This was an amazing, inspiring workshop with superb tuition – helpful and far beyond my expectations. I cannot praise the whole experience enough!
I recently attended the Autumn workshop in Wanaka with Richard and Glen and loved every minute of it.
2 of the photos I took on the Autumn Masterclass have won me honours at our Camera Club. Thanks again for the tuition and bullying me to wake up early!
