Richard Young is a photographer based in Wānaka, New Zealand, and the founder of New Zealand Photography Workshops.

Originally from Sussex, England, Richard grew up on a country estate in the South Downs, where an early connection with nature took root. He travelled to New Zealand in 2004 and made it his home, settling in Wānaka to live close to the landscapes he now shares with his students. Extended time in Japan, Antarctica and Scotland continues to shape both his own photography and the trips he leads.

His photography has been recognised internationally — including NZ Geographic Photographer of the Year (Landscape and Wildlife, 2024) and awards from the International Photography Awards, the Fine Art Photography Awards and the ND Awards — and his prints are widely exhibited and held in private collections. He is Epson’s fine art printing ambassador and an official Nikon Creator, and prints every one of his own photographs personally, in his studio.

Richard has guided photographers throughout New Zealand since 2010, and founded New Zealand Photography Workshops in 2013. He teaches from the same approach that shapes his own work — slowing down, looking closer, and finding what’s genuinely yours in a landscape, rather than repeating the shot everyone else has already taken.

Whether you’re new to a camera or developing a body of work of your own, Richard’s workshops are built around real time in the field, small groups, and hands-on printing instruction drawn directly from his own studio practice.
