Join Richard Young and an intimate group of just six photographers on an exclusive journey through the quiet, snowbound landscapes of Hokkaido. This carefully curated winter tour ventures deep into Japan’s northern frontier—where silence, simplicity, and atmosphere converge to create one of the most compelling photographic environments in the world.
Across eastern and northern Hokkaido, winter transforms the land into a study of restraint and elegance. Rolling hills dissolve beneath fresh snow, solitary trees stand etched against soft, diffused skies, and weathered farm buildings become quiet anchors within vast, minimalist scenes. It is a landscape defined not by excess, but by nuance—offering photographers the rare opportunity to explore composition, mood, and personal expression in its purest form.
Our journey begins in central Hokkaido, where we’ll photograph its iconic yet understated rural landscapes—graceful woodlands, sculptural trees, and the delicate textures that emerge only in winter. From here, we travel north to the remote coastal reaches near Wakkanai. Along this stark shoreline, fishing boats rest in stillness and torii gates stand quietly in the sea, creating powerful, contemplative scenes shaped by the interplay of land, water, and winter light.
This itinerary marks a deliberate evolution from our previous Hokkaido tours, designed to access a deeper, more refined vision of the region. Alongside Richard, you’ll be guided by one of Japan’s most respected photography guides—whose relationships open doors to rarely visited and private locations–an expert with extensive local knowledge who has guided some of the world’s best-known photographers, including Michael Kenna. Together, we will help you access the most photogenic and often hidden locations, ensuring you come away with a strong portfolio of images that celebrate the purity and simplicity of Hokkaido’s winter.
Richard Young has guided two previous Hokkaido photography tours and will be joined by one of Japan’s very best photography guides, who has led some of the world’s top photographers around these landscapes.
Richard and our local guide bring to this experience a love for exploring a more expressive approach to landscape and nature photography to help you make some truly unique photographs during the expedition.
A reasonable level of fitness is required for this tour. To access a number of the more remote and photogenic locations, we will need to use snowshoes and walk through deep snow-covered terrain. You should be comfortable snowshoeing for up to 45 minutes each way. While the snowshoeing is not technically difficult, it does will take place in cold, often harsh winter conditions, so a reasonable level of fitness and resilience is essential.
Equally integral to the journey is the cultural experience of Japan in winter. Each evening, we retreat to carefully selected accommodation, many featuring traditional onsen—natural hot spring baths that offer a restorative contrast to the cold, still days in the field. Dining is a highlight in itself, with beautifully prepared local cuisine showcasing the seasonal flavours of Hokkaido—an essential and memorable part of the experience.
We’ve designed this tour with pickups/drop at the closest airports to fully maximize our time during the tour. For those flying into Tokyo, travel here is easy via local flights to Hokkaido.
