Based in Central Otago, our Light & Composition Masterclass is designed as an ideal programme to expand your use of perspective and light in the landscape. Over the 4 days, you will explore this remote region in 4WD vehicles. Famous for Grahame Sydney’s iconic New Zealand paintings, the Maniototo Plains are an elevated inland landscape, and distinctively Central Otago. The enormous, untamed landscapes give you a sense of place, and nature has its own sophistication as it quietly reveals its differences in subtle and unexpected ways.
This masterclass offers a mixture of both tuition and post-processing sessions to help you create some stunning photographs in the diverse light and perspective of Central Otago’s Maniototo landscape. We will run through our programme of advanced camera setup for landscape photography and tutorials on composition & light. We will then help you process your two best images from the masterclass and produce finished 16×22″ fine art prints to take home.
Master working the light in the landscape, from warm dawn to blue dusk tones , a challenging and critical part of landscape photography.
Learn to work with perspective to change how you present your subject within this vast landscape with its many rustic buildings.
We will explore the beautiful Central Otago landscapes and some of the forgotten areas of the Maniototo, from rugged mountains to lakes & rolling farmland. From views over the Hawkdun Ranges, the iconic Wedderburn Railway Station, the historic Hayes Engineering Works and homestead. Sunsets will see us venturing further afield to explore the beautiful Poolburn area and the majestic St Bathans to explore these unique landscapes.

I have learned the art of seeing, and that light and composition are important elements – it’s not just about taking a photo of the environment. Fabulous guides, and great people, I keep coming back. Pack a bag, and book a flight, you can’t lose.
I couldn’t have asked for more. It was great to have Ken’s composition talk and then get out in the field and look for the light on the hills, and the warm tones in the early morning, it’s just stunning. I learned how to capture that and to keep our images simple. It’s worth every cent and these guys take you to places you’d never find by yourself. New Zealand Photography Workshops are just beyond anything else.
Absolute trip of a lifetime. As a relatively new photographer, I’ve gone from understanding the basics of the exposure triangle, aperture and shutter speed to where I really feel like I’ve managed to get my head around it in an astonishingly fast time. I would highly recommend the masterclass. You’re made to feel welcome and it’s an unbeatable learning experience.
I found Glen’s guidance on the Maniototo Masterclass Outstanding.
