Based in Central Otago, our Light & Composition Masterclass is designed as an ideal programme to expand your use of perspective and light in the landscape. Over the 5 days, you will explore this remote region in 4WD vehicles. Famous for Grahame Sydney’s iconic New Zealand paintings, the Maniototo Plains are an elevated inland landscape, and distinctively Central Otago. The enormous, untamed landscapes give you a sense of place, and nature has its own sophistication as it quietly reveals its differences in subtle and unexpected ways.
This masterclass offers a mixture of both tuition and post-processing sessions to help you create some stunning photographs in the diverse light and perspective of Central Otago’s Maniototo landscape. We will run through our programme of advanced camera setup for landscape photography and tutorials on composition & light. We will then help you process your two best images from the masterclass and produce finished 16×22″ fine art prints to take home.
We will explore the beautiful Central Otago landscapes and some of the forgotten areas of the Maniototo, from rugged mountains to lakes & rolling farmland. From views over the Hawkdun Ranges, the iconic Wedderburn Railway Station, the historic Hayes Engineering Works and homestead. Sunsets will see us venturing further afield to explore the beautiful Poolburn area and the majestic St Bathans to explore these unique landscapes.

This was the ideal workshop for me as it allowed me to put previous learnings into practice. I also learnt from seeing other participants’ photos – that is a great part of the workshop.
