Where Namibia’s desert landscapes become fine art
This is the chance to join Craig Potton and Richard Young on a photographic journey through the world’s oldest desert, dramatic dunes, remote coastlines, and iconic desert landscapes. Namibia is one of the most visually arresting countries on Earth. Vast desert plains, sculpted dunes, skeletal trees, dramatic granite inselbergs and a wild Atlantic coastline combine to create a photographer’s dream destination.
This carefully curated 11-day photographic journey explores the heart of Namibia’s desert landscapes — from the remote dunes of the NamibRand Nature Reserve and the iconic salt pans of Sossusvlei, to the coastal fogs of Swakopmund and the monumental granite peaks of Spitzkoppe.
Throughout the tour, Richard and Craig provide thoughtful guidance, creative insight, and one-on-one support—helping photographers refine their vision, respond to light, and create meaningful, exhibition-quality images. This is a journey for those who want more than photographs: it’s an opportunity to experience Namibia deeply, slowly, and creatively.
Award winning Craig Potton is one of New Zealand’s best known and respected landscape photographers and an ardent conservationist.
Richard Young is a full-time landscape and wildlife photographer based in Wanaka. He has been guiding groups of photographers in New Zealand since 2010, and in 2013, he founded New Zealand Photography Workshops.
For this tour, we sort out some of the best accommodation to immerse ourselves right within the Namibian landscape.
Upon your arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. This first evening offers a relaxed opportunity to meet your fellow photographers, discuss the creative journey ahead, and settle into the rhythm of the tour.
Accommodation: Windhoek Luxury Suites
A scenic journey into the heart of the Namib Desert brings us to the vast and remote NamibRand Nature Reserve — wilderness photography at its finest. Endless dune systems, immense plains, and extraordinary desert light create endlessly compelling subjects. We’ll explore abstract desert forms, dune lines, textures, and minimalist landscapes, with dedicated time for both sunrise and sunset shoots.
Accommodation: Wolwedans Dune Camp
With early access into Namib-Naukluft National Park, we’ll photograph one of the most extraordinary landscapes on Earth. Towering red dunes, white salt pans, and ancient camelthorn trees create surreal, graphic compositions unlike anywhere else in the world. Multiple mornings are dedicated to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, allowing us time to work with changing light, refine compositions, and truly immerse ourselves in this iconic landscape.
Accommodation: Dead Valley Lodge
A dramatic transition from desert to ocean brings us to Namibia’s Atlantic coast. Our time here includes a Living Desert tour — one of the highlights of the journey — photographing the extraordinary desert-adapted creatures that thrive in the fog belt: palmato geckos, Namaqua chameleons, and Peringuey’s sidewinding adder. We’ll visit the wild Skeleton Coast, watch the sunset over towering dunes at Sandwich Harbour, and photograph flamingos wading in the shallows of Walvis Bay.
Accommodation: Strand Hotel
The tour concludes at Spitzkoppe — Namibia’s “Matterhorn” — where massive granite domes rise dramatically from the desert floor. This striking landscape rewards bold compositions, intimate details, and if conditions allow, night photography beneath pristine, star-filled skies. After our final shoot, we depart for the transfer to Walvis Bay International Airport.
Accommodation: Spitzkoppen Lodge (final night prior to departure)
