Richard Young’s work offers a fresh approach to New Zealand landscape photography, he defines himself as a photographic artist working within the landscape. His vision has developed from years of capturing the grand vista to focus on an emotional and expressive engagement in the landscape he works in—to produce distinct and personal bodies of work.
Richard’s landscape-focused work has won awards in numerous international landscape photography competitions, including winning the Best Landscape at the Banff Mountain Photography Competition in 2010. His work has been widely exhibited across New Zealand, Canada, America and England in solo and group exhibitions, along with display in his own Wellington gallery space in Wellington for seven years up until 2020.
His recognition for creating exquisitely detailed fine-art prints and his extensive knowledge of Giclée printing has led him to become a brand ambassador for Epson Printers & Paper. He also works with Nikon New Zealand as an official Nikon Creator—part of a global team of visionary artists exploring new ground empowered by the Nikon system—with his focus being telling stories using an expressive approach to nature photography.
Richard has a passion for teaching photography and works to motivate and inspire people who join his workshops. He has guided groups of photographers in New Zealand since 2010 and founded New Zealand Photography Workshops in 2013. He also teaches photography via Online Courses and eBooks.
“A photograph can let us see the landscape in a way we cannot with our own eyes. This moment—my expressive response to the landscape—has been frozen in time and will never be revealed the same again; this landscape will change, as will the light and elements that combine to create the emotion in the picture.”
